HISTORY OF CAR: Up for sale is my 1962 S Series Valiant. This vehicle was sold in 1962 and purchased from Collins Motors Pty Ltd in Carlton Victoria with the original dealer tag still riveted under the bonnet - (Sold and Serviced by Collins Motors Pty Ltd Cnr Queensbury & Leichester Streets, Carlton Vic). It has traveled 68,000 miles from new and the condition of the vehicle reflects the low mileage. I bought it from the original owner's family. The car comes with an original sales brochure and instruction booklet. The car is as basic as you could buy. The only options was locking fuel cap and the wheel trim rings. The “Painter’ weather-shield is also original. A Wibroc (typical early 60’s name brand for mirrors) side Mirror is attached. The car has never had a radio and still has a mint radio blanking plate in place. The car still has its original dealer sticker (Collins Motors) in the rear window which is bright and basically new. The condition of the car is as new as you expect for an unrestored example of an S series. It has the original motor (SP engine prefix) and original 3 speed manual (on the column).
MOTOR: Motor is strong and uses no oil. Still has the original factory paint on the motor and tappet cover. The car is mechanically all original even down to the original exhaust tail pipe down sweep and original exhaust manifold. The radiator has recently been recored.
TRANSMISSION: The transmission is silky smooth. I had the bearings in the gearbox replaced in 2005 and it's very quiet and smooth to use. Clutch has a slight shudder on cold take offs. BODY: The body has no rust but has had a slight repair in the boot area. The beaver panel, rear stone tray and fins haven't been touched but the boot area has been bogged and repaired at some stage due to a small dent. The colour is the original Bronze Beige. The taillights and indicators are still factory bright, no cracks or crazing. The chrome is unmarked and looks new. Side chrome doesn't even have any car-park dents. Minor stone chips are on the front and rear stone trays including the wheel arch flanges. The car has never been fitted with mudflaps.
INTERIOR: The interior is as new. Original seat, floor, and hoodlining coverings. All in top original condition. No tears in the seats however the drivers side has a slight sag from age. The door cards are unmarked (even on the drivers door) and the metal plates on the window sill areas are unmarked, factory new (which is so unusual for this model). The floor rubber is as new but has only a slight crack (about 1 inch in length) coming out from the dip switch area. The boot is as new with the original spare tyre still in place (Olympic Cross ply).
TYRES: The tyres are 3000 miles old (3 years old). They are 'GT Radial' and have a white line in them. Cost was $440 5 years ago. Tyres have NO uneven wear or spots.
BRAKES AND FRONTEND: Front-end is as new, no problems. Brakes are unassisted drums with a recently rebuilt master cylinder and new brake wheel cylinders. They stop straight but require a very heavy foot. No pulling to either side. I recently had the master cylinder reconditioned (resleeved in stainless steel) and all new wheel brake cylinders.
REGISTRATION: The car is currently on Qld Historic/Special Interest registration. If sold to a Queensland buyer the car goes with a Safety Certificate and Transfer of Registration (Historic Rego in Queensland means you must be a member of a car club). The number plates OSV100 remain my property and will be removed from the car and replaced with standard number plates if sold in Queensland. If the car is sold interstate, it will leave Queensland unregistered and uninsured. I have included several pictures which reflect the car's condition. Any questions, please email me. A recent quote from CEVA Logistics is $550 GST included from my address to their depot in Melbourne. I am in no rush to sell this car. Any other questions about the car, sale and transport are most welcome.
I almost forgot! THIS CAR WON ‘BEST ORIGINAL S SERIES VALIANT’ AT THE MARCH 2008 R & S SERIES NATIONAL RALLY. It was judged by other rally entrants and won best original amongst a field of 70 to 80 of Australia’s best R and S Valiants. It was by far the most original, as it left the factory, S series Valiant at the rally. I drove this car from Melbourne to Bendigo and then from Bendigo to Brisbane in March 2008 for the rally. This was the longest trip this car has ever been on traveling about 1500 miles in a week. The car never missed a beat, never got hot (38 degree days in a Victorian Heatwave) and constantly returned between 22 to 24 miles per gallon at a cruising speed of between 65 to 70 miles per hour on the way home. I guess this car is just like driving a 4 to 5 year old Valiant.
The Valiant is currently in storage at the northern end of the Gold Coast. If you would like to inspect it, we would need to make a date and time as I am a shift worker. More photos of this car are available upon request.
